How to save restaurants you find on Instagram

Instagram's saved folder is where restaurant recommendations go to die. Here's how to get them onto a map.

A traveller looks from her phone toward a cafe-lined street from a hotel room.

The problem isn't saving. Instagram makes saving easy. The problem is that saved posts don't sit on a map, don't tell you what's near you, and aren't searchable by area. Here's what helps.

Instagram Collections

Group saved posts into named folders, like "Lisbon" or "Date night".

Best for:
Keeping everything inside Instagram.
Watch out:
No map, no opening hours, no reminder when you're nearby.
Platforms:
iPhone, Android
Price:
Free

Mapstr

Save the place onto your own map with tags. Mapstr pitches itself as the end of "posts saved on Instagram", and mapstr plus adds proximity alerts when you walk past a saved place.

Best for:
Turning reels into pins you'll actually see.
Watch out:
You add each place yourself; it doesn't read your Instagram saves.
Platforms:
iPhone, Android, web
Price:
Free, with a paid mapstr plus
Official page

Google Maps "Want to go" list

Search the place from the post and save it.

Best for:
Already living in Google Maps.
Watch out:
Lists get crowded fast.
Platforms:
iPhone, Android, web
Price:
Free

Where Glütty fits

Glütty doesn't save restaurants from Instagram. Where it helps is later, when you're at the table: it translates and explains the menu, and members get a match score for each dish. So the place from the reel turns into a good order, not just a visit.

Our steer

Pick one map, Mapstr or Google Maps, and move a post the moment you save it. A list you can see on a map gets used. See our guide to restaurant wishlist apps.
